The Friedman Chronicles: Prologue

My latest project, entitled “The Friedman Chronicles,” is my first try at Sci-Fi. I intend it to be a work that will help improve my writing and come in nothing more than a series-like approach. Now, for a rant.

The Sci-Fi industry as a whole has been tainted by a few popular titles. What was once turning into a mature and serious genre was turned into a Saturday morning cartoon with the likes of Star Wars and Star Trek and their kin. While a few diamonds remain against the rough (namely: Blade Runner, Dark City, Alien and more recently The Island and Serenity), most are just utter garbage produced for the almighty dollar. Rarely do they explore.

I’m of the firm opinion that the genre name itself is one of the reasons it has degraded. No piece of work should run on the mere concept of futurism, but should be story driven. While even a few no-nos (such as Star Wars) follow this, most do not. Science fiction for science fiction’s sake can be seen in Star Trek, the newer episodes of Star Wars, the later versions of the Alien series, and even a bit in The Island (which I can overlook because of the story-driven approach).

Though many movies suffer from this effect, I should point out that each and every movie I cited as bad have their good points (except maybe the new Star Wars and the later Alien movies…especially Alien vs. Predator…what a pile of crap). For example: Star Wars brought the idea of mysticism into mainstream science fiction. I like this idea and think it adds another huge element to be explored. And Star Trek–how I hate thee. Your Aesop’s Fables means of telling shoddy stories based around crappy characters always irked me. But I have to give the show props for simply bringing the genre into main-stream.
